PTA registration rules
- Passport-based registration is cheaper if you arrive in Pakistan within 60 days of entry stamp.
- CNIC-based registration applies to phones bought locally or registered after 60 days.
- All amounts are inclusive of regulatory duty, sales tax, IT duty, mobile levy and 3% provincial WHT.
- PTA blocks any non-registered device after 60 days of first SIM use on a Pakistani network.
- One passport = up to 5 devices in a lifetime; second device onwards uses CNIC rates.
Common questions
How much is iPhone PTA tax in Pakistan in 2026?+
PTA tax for iPhones in 2025-26 ranges from about PKR 67,000 (iPhone 11 on passport) to PKR 193,000 (iPhone 16 Pro Max on CNIC). Passport rates are lower than CNIC rates because they target overseas Pakistanis bringing personal devices.
What is the difference between passport and CNIC PTA tax?+
Passport tax is the concessional rate (lower) for travellers registering within 60 days of arrival. CNIC tax is the standard commercial rate paid by anyone buying a phone locally or registering it more than 60 days after arrival in Pakistan.
How to check PTA tax on mobile?+
Dial *8484# from the SIM in your phone, or visit dirbs.pta.gov.pk and enter the 15-digit IMEI (find it under Settings → General → About on iPhone, or by dialling *#06#). The portal returns one of three statuses: Compliant, Non-Compliant (tax due) or Blocked. To check the exact PTA tax amount, log into the DIRBS portal with your CNIC and add the IMEI — the system generates a PSID with the live amount.
How to pay PTA tax online?+
1) Log into dirbs.pta.gov.pk with your CNIC or passport. 2) Click 'Apply for COC' (Certificate of Compliance) and enter your IMEI. 3) The portal generates a PSID (a 17-digit FBR payment ID). 4) Pay via any commercial bank branch, ATM, internet banking, JazzCash, EasyPaisa or 1Link OTC. 5) PTA whitelists your IMEI within 24 hours of payment. The whole process is online — no visit to PTA or FBR is required.
How to pay PTA tax through JazzCash?+
Open JazzCash → Bill Payments → Government Payments → FBR/PTA. Enter the 17-digit PSID generated from the DIRBS portal, confirm the amount, and pay from your JazzCash wallet. Same flow works on EasyPaisa and most mobile banking apps (HBL, UBL, Meezan, Faysal, Bank Alfalah). Keep the transaction reference — PTA confirms whitelisting via SMS within 24 hours.
Is PTA tax removed in Pakistan?+
No. PTA tax has not been removed. Rumours circulate every budget cycle but as of 2025-26 the DIRBS regulation remains in force. The Finance Act 2025 actually adjusted some slabs upward. Any device on a Pakistani SIM beyond 60 days of first use must pay PTA tax to remain functional.
How to pay PTA tax on my iPhone?+
Generate a PSID on the FBR/DIRBS portal, then pay through any bank branch, ATM, mobile banking app, JazzCash, EasyPaisa or 1Link OTC. Once paid, your IMEI is whitelisted within 24 hours and the phone works on all networks (Jazz, Zong, Telenor, Ufone).
How to unblock a mobile from PTA without tax?+
There is no legal way to unblock a PTA-blocked phone without paying tax. The DIRBS regulation binds every Pakistani operator. Three legitimate workarounds exist: (1) use the device on Wi-Fi only (no SIM), (2) use it abroad on a roaming SIM that is not Pakistani, or (3) sell/gift it to someone outside Pakistan. 'IMEI patcher' apps are illegal under PECA 2016 and brick the phone permanently.
How long can I use my iPhone in Pakistan without PTA tax?+
60 days from the date your phone first connects to a Pakistani SIM. After that, the IMEI is automatically blocked for cellular use until PTA tax is paid and registration is approved.
Can I avoid PTA tax on iPhone?+
No legal way. Using a non-registered IMEI past 60 days is blocked by all Pakistani operators (Jazz, Zong, Telenor, Ufone) under the DIRBS regulation. Wi-Fi-only use is permitted but the device cannot make/receive calls or use mobile data.
